The Winner of the Cap-Of-The-Month was none other than "TONY SELF"
at our last meeting. Tony is currently employed by Clear Channel ( KTBZ/KHMX,
Richard Gherlovich, Chief Engineer ).
Tony graduated in May from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of
Science in Industrial Technology Electronics and a Bachelor of Arts in Radio
and Television.
While in school he worked with Steven S. Sandlin (SBE member- Bryan, TX),
Chief Engineer for the Sam Houston State Department of Radio and Television.
He has also completed a two-month internship at KTBZ/KHMX during the build-out of
the new facilities at 1990 Post Oak. He is currently working part-time
doing remote broadcasts and studio work.
My interest in the broadcast industry grew from my interest in music and
audio engineering. I've played guitar for 11 years and have always been
interested in audio recording.
After working on the closed-circuit TV news program at Cy-Creek High School,
and running sound for the school theater department, I decided to major in
R/TV in college. My minor was IT Electronics, but I wanted to learn more
about electronics, so I decided to work on two degrees.
I volunteered to help out Steve at Sam Houston State and was able to earn
lab credit for my work with him. Working with Steve was my first experience
in a Broadcast Facility. I enjoyed working with him and gained experience
working in the TV studios, audio studios and new remote van.
My internship here at KTBZ/KHMX FM was my first commercial station
experience. Richard Gerlovich, Robert Reymont and Donald Chapman were all
great teachers and made my internship a very valuable experience. Also,
they are all certified SBE members.
Right now, I feel that I'm working to learn. I'm exposed to new things
every day and I enjoy the challenge of trying to keep up with remotes and
studio work.
I'm really not sure where I'd like to be in five years. I'm sure that the
job market will change and different opportunities will present themselves,
so right now I'm just trying to learn as much as I can so I can keep up with
new technology and understand the Broadcast Industry.
No, I don't know of anyone my age, outside that's interested in broadcast
engineering. And, there wasn't much interest in engineering among the
students at Sam Houston.
I still play music in my free time...when I can find some.
Richard Gerlovich says that Tony helped him
build his studio complex as an
intern (which means he worked for free for long hours). He is very intelligent
and has strong growth potential, He sees him staying in the
entertainment
industry and moving up the latter quickly. He sings in a rock band and runs the
sound board simultaneously.
Tony definitely seems to be a very talented, aggressive
young man,
with determination and drive.
We welcome Tony to our chapter and feel he will be
an asset to it in the years
ahead...Help me to welcome and encourage him at
future meetings.
He seems to
be working part time and maybe some of you could use
some extra help from time to time.
Congratulations Tony for being our Member-of-The-Month,
We are proud to have you as a member of our Chapter!!
