Certification Update
A notification for a local exam for Broadcast Technologist Certification arrived last
week. In processing this paperwork it occurred to me that this was a prime opportunity to
remind
all of you that there are levels of certification for everyone. Starting with the levels
that might be
considered entry such as Broadcast Technologist in Television and in Radio. This level has
become
a practical substitute for what some of you may remember as the FCC 3rd class
License (with the all
important Broadcast Endorsement).
The SBE also offers an exam that can be administered on a station by station level for
operators only.
This can also provide a opportunity for chief engineers and station managers to upgrade
the level of
their staff. For the members of the staff it provides a start on the road to obtaining
further certification
levels that demonstrate to the boss that they are serious about the business. Getting, and
demonstrating that they have acquired, the skills that make them an asset to the company
in todays environment of doing more with less.
Your station can administer the operator level exams in house. You as the chief
engineer have the opportunity to provide the encouragement and support that your staff
needs to
get themselves certified. Certification provides pride of accomplishment to the staff and
makes them
a more valuable employee.
When you proctor an exam you are credited with points toward your re-certification.
So it is really a win-win situation.
Our chapter is working hard to arrange for a mini conference in Houston in the fall.
That conference
will provide opportunities to learn from experts. It will also provide some credits for
re-certification
for those who need it. A chance to learn stuff that you might not otherwise see, and
re-cert points.
Again, a win-win situation.
Next exam cycle is June 9-19, to late to apply for that one. Not too late to apply for
the August 18-28th local cycle, deadline is July 7th. Maybe you
should get your act together.
Till
Next Month,
